The Hull is April Smith’s original concept in the research and development stage. It is seeking aligned investors and qualified development partners to support prototyping, technical validation, safety testing, and responsible development. It is not currently available for purchase or public use.

The Hull does not begin with immersion. It begins with orientation: helping a person understand what is happening, what can be trusted, and what may require attention.
It is off-body, non-immersive, calm, and user-controlled. It is not designed to continuously listen, record, surveil, or behaviorally profile.

The Hull is an original, compass-sized external device: an off-body orientation instrument with a human-readable interface.
It is designed to help a person understand digital, infrastructure, and environmental conditions before deciding what to do. It can organize existing system information and verified alert feeds without requiring an always-on microphone, immersive display, or new behavioral-surveillance layer.

Protective assistance
The Hull can provide an optional scam-and-pressure check for older adults and anyone who feels confused, rushed, or uncertain. It supports judgment without shaming the person or silently taking control.
The Hull asks the person not to click, pay, reply, transfer money, or disclose information while the request is reviewed.
It identifies warning signs such as impersonation, secrecy, unusual urgency, gift cards, cryptocurrency, remote access, or pressure to bypass trusted people.
It directs the person to a known official number, saved trusted contact, or other independent source—not the contact information supplied by the suspicious request.
When uncertainty remains, the person may choose to involve a trusted family member, caregiver, advocate, financial institution, or appropriate authority.
Three-layer sequence
A deliberate sequence prevents information overload and keeps the person—not the interface—at the center.
Orientation first
Begin with a clear answer to the most immediate question: What is happening around me right now?
Integrity second
Explain whether the systems a person relies upon are stable, degraded, interrupted, or uncertain.
Environment third
Surface relevant safety signals without burying the person in ambient collection or unnecessary noise.
Bounded infrastructure use case
A roadway segment where limited visibility, fixed objects, or inadequate recovery space makes safe response to an unexpected event more difficult.
This pattern shifts attention from automatic driver blame toward the structural conditions surrounding an incident: narrow travel lanes, roadside poles, walls or fences, vegetation occlusion, parked vehicles, blind curves, and poorly placed signage.
It is especially relevant to school buses, elder-transport and accessible vehicles, utility trucks, and emergency vehicles that require more room to maneuver safely.
Governance built into the design
The person decides when guidance is requested. The system does not demand continuous access to attention, sound, or behavior.
Signals are translated into calm, understandable information—not a stream of alerts that creates more uncertainty.
The Hull remains off-body and non-immersive so human perception stays connected to the surrounding world.
Technology supports judgment. It does not quietly replace it, profile it, or make the person secondary to the system.

The Hull is documented as a distinct external-device concept and environmental-awareness system. Its white paper defines the instrument’s off-body, non-immersive design, human-awareness purpose, operating boundaries, and guidance layer.

Origin and meaning
The name draws from the protective hull of a ship and from Hull, Massachusetts—a coastal setting shaped by navigation, public safety, engineering, and the need to read changing conditions clearly.
The metaphor is maritime. The application is universal.
